Cheese production at Nørager Mejeri is extremely energy-intensive. The company produces up to 25,000 tonnes of white cheese per year and works around the clock, seven days a week. The production level fluctuates according to demand, which places high demands on the energy supply. The company also operates an outdoor washing station and a workshop for minor repairs.
The biggest challenge was to replace the previous use of natural gas with a sustainable alternative that could reliably cover the widely varying energy consumption of between 600 kg/h and 4,500 kg/h within a few minutes.
Biomass solution
Focus BioEnergy developed a customised 2.6 MW biomass boiler system that can react flexibly to load changes thanks to its design for 60 bar (operation at 35 bar). In addition, a 5.0 MW emergency boiler system on natural gas was installed as a backup. The system fulfils all legal environmental requirements following the environmental permit of June 2020, including emission limits, self-inspection requirements and chimney height guidelines.
Sustainable energy for demanding production
The new biomass plant has enabled Nørager Mejeri to completely replace its natural gas consumption. This results in a significant CO2 reduction, lower energy costs and a long-term stable and sustainable energy supply that is perfectly matched to the production requirements.
